Press Release: US Security Industry backs unique UK software development method

Praxis High Integrity Systems’ software development approach recognized by US National Cyber Security Partnership to assist in the fight against US cyber security attacks…

A report released yesterday by the National Cyber Security Partnership (NCSP)1 http://www.cyberpartnership.org), a US partnership of leading companies, academic institutions and government agencies, has identified Praxis High Integrity Systems’ “Correctness By Construction” as one of only three development methods that can improve the security of computer software, and therefore enhance the security of the US critical information infrastructure.

The report, entitled ‘Improving Security Across the Software Development Lifecycle’, has been produced since security is now a serious problem. If present trends continue, security will be much worse in the future.

The report finds that while there are many reasons for security problems, a primary cause is that much of the software supporting the US cyber infrastructure cannot withstand security attacks, as these attacks exploit vulnerabilities and other defects in software systems.

One of the principal actions from the report is to broaden the use of current best practice for developing low-defect, secure software such as the Praxis High Integrity Systems “Correctness by Construction” approach.

Martin Croxford, Business Manager at Bath-based Praxis High Integrity Systems commented: “We are delighted that this highly-regarded report, which defines a path for software producers to follow in developing secure software, has identified the Praxis High Integrity Systems “Correctness by Construction” approach as one of only three methods across the industry that will deliver secure software with very low defect rates.

“A strong motivation from sources such as corporate leaders, customers, or regulation is still required to ensure widespread uptake of these best-practice approaches to software development”, continued Croxford.

To raise awareness of Correctness By Construction, Praxis High Integrity Systems is holding a Software Seminar on 11th May 2004 at the Royal Aeronautical Society, London. Entitled “Reliable Software is Cheaper”, the seminar will explore how to achieve low cost and time to market without compromising on quality. In particular, the seminar will show how reliable software can be delivered more cheaply and more quickly than unreliable software.
