Job Description 

Praxis is a systems engineering company working in the Rail, Aerospace and Defence, Air Traffic Control and Nuclear sectors.

We are now looking for a Human Factors specialist who can deliver leading-edge Human Factors solutions to clients in the critical systems market. Work will involve providing sales support to Business Managers in the winning of human factors and systems engineering projects. The role will also provide leadership in the development of novel approaches to systems engineering, human factors and management that increase the value of Praxis services and reduce the waste that is introduced in their delivery.

Job Role
The role will cover all aspects of the systems life-cycle, and subject to competency and experience, could include any or all of the following:

  • Identification of system requirements including user requirements.
  • Generation of systems design or evaluation thereof.
  • Conducting feasibility studies.
  • Determination or evaluation of integration strategy for large-scale systems (HFIPs).
  • Determination or evaluation of validation strategy for large-scale systems.
  • Contributing to technical content, for sales proposals.
  • Contributing to the enhancement of and continuous development of Praxis’ capabilities in this area.
  • Acting as an advocate for Praxis within the national and international Human Factors communities, by speaking at conferences, attending standards committees, etc.
  • Contributing to technical strategy for large and complex sales proposals and/or projects.
  • Providing training and mentoring to less experienced staff.
  • Setting direction for Praxis’ systems engineering offering consistent with that of Praxis’ overall engineering strategy.

Experience / Skills required :

  • A degree or post graduate qualification in Human Factors – or significant industrial experience.
  • A track record of consistent in-service training demonstrating a professional approach to maintenance of skills.
  • A knowledge of Human Factors standard tools and techniques, and a critical appreciation of their strengths and weaknesses; for example task analysis, workload analysis, HMI, HCI, Human Error and Human Reliability Analysis, training needs analysis etc.
  • A sound appreciation of the underlying principles of applying Human Factors in a complex systems environment, including one or more of systems of systems, requirements engineering, systems design, systems integration or systems validation.
  • Membership of the Ergonomic Society UK would be preferred.
  • At least five years working in Human Factors within relevant sectors – either directly within industry, or an academic or consulting environment. (Relevant sectors are civil and military aerospace, defence, air traffic management, nuclear, mainline and underground rail).
  • Working knowledge of one or more regulatory regimes and the national/international standards appropriate to that regime.
  • The ability to think analytically, rigorously and creatively.
  • Effective oral and written communications skills to a range of technical and commercial audiences and a customer-focused outlook.
  • The ability to carry out detailed justified work to commercial and technical requirements, and to be able to constructively criticise and assess others’ work.
  • The ability and personal drive to work in teams or alone, with client and Praxis staff, both in Praxis offices and on-site in the UK and potentially overseas.
  • The ability to mentor and develop others.
